How many times have you walked out of the house only to immediately return, convinced that you left the iron on, or forgot to lock the back door?

It would be considered normal to occasionally forget something or to worry that you neglected to do something and take a corrective action to ‘doubly check’ if you like. If, however, such worries and concerns begin to overwhelm you, or cause you to repeatedly perform certain “rituals” to help keep your anxieties at bay, you may be suffering from Obsessive Compulsive disorder (OCD).

A perfect example would be someone who is constantly thinking over and over about something, such as keeping your hands clean from germs? This is an obsess ional thought and can take many guises such as counting rituals, paranoia, vanity over ones health or appearance just to name a few. They are continuous nagging obsessive thoughts from which the sufferer gets neither respite nor relief.

In the case of the person thinking about keeping their hands clean they could find themselves repeatedly washing their hands for an obscene amount of time because they want relief from these nagging obsessional thoughts. At the same they will realise or ask themselves, ” What the hell am I doing?”

These are the symptoms of an individual with Obsessive-Compulsive Behaviour (OCB). OCB is an anxiety disorder, which carries a person’s ordinary concerns to an extreme. The compulsion is an action or thought the individual performs to bring relief to their nagging and grating obsessions thoughts.
