Social Phobia and Social Anxiety describe a very common problem for people who suffer from the fear of social situations and the interaction with other people that can bring on the fear and anxiety of being judged and critized by other people; leading to feelings of inadequacy; being’ ’; being the center of attention; being watched doing something; humiliation; panic attacks and depression.

Social anxiety typically starts to develope in childhood and is underpinned by a combination of different influences such as Parental and other social influences, our psychological foundations and habitual thinking.
Children tend to learn social anxiety from their parents or guardians who bring them up every day. Socially anxious parents fear being judged themselves believe they need to stick to a close set of social rules and tend to be more judgemental towards their children. They also communicate the constant message that other peoples opinions are really important.
Our psychological foundations also underpin whether or not we create social anxiety. The greater our external sense of power and control and low self esteem.. the greater our levels of social anxiety will be.

Some symptoms that may appear alongside (or be caused by) social phobia or social anxiety are…..
- A fear of public speaking

What is a Phobia?
A phobia ( from the Greek word ‘Phobus’, meaning Fear), is an irrational, intense and persistant fear of particular situations, objects, activities or persons.
This overwhelming inhibiting fear that surges from within is always triggered by something outside oneself. It is this external symbolic representation of an inward anxiety. Social Phobia treatment is one of the most common requests at my clinic.
One of the most common symptoms of anxiety types is the dreaded Panic Attack. Panic attacks are are sudden, discrete periods of intense anxiety. According to the American Psychological Association symptoms of a panic attack commonly last approximately ten minutes. However, panic attacks can be as short as 1-5 minutes, while more severe panic attacks may form a cyclic series of episodes, lasting for an extended period, sometimes hours.
Symptoms of a typical Panic Attack would be a sudden intense anxiety or fear; sense of impending doom or disaster; sweating or trembling; pounding heart and chest tightness; shortness of breath; being fixed to a spot; and dizzyness to name a few.
